Mediterranean Dry Woodlands and Steppe (PA1213)

Blogs posted from this ecoregion:

This ecoregion occupies interior plateaus and mountain ranges of the Maghreb region, from Morocco eastward to the Alexandria region of Egypt, lying generally between the coastal Mediterranean woodlands and forests to the north and the Sahara to the south.

The ecoregion is bordered to the north (in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya) by the reddish Mediterranean Woodlands and Forests (PA1214) and to the south by the light beige North Saharan Steppe and Woodlands (PA1321).

Description of the Ecoregion

Adapted from the ecoregion’s Wikipedia page, at higher elevations on the plateau, different types of steppe vegetation dominate depending on soil conditions. For example, in the slopes and foothills of the Atlas Mountains there is a steppe dominated by Stipa tenacissima whereas Artemisia herba-alba dominates in where there are silty slopes and depressions; Lygeum spartum steppe grows in sandy soils. Where sand accumulates or in depressions there is a mosaic of vegetation type.

Birds of the Ecoregion
