Antarctic Marine Ecoregions

Blogs posted from these ecoregions: No blogs have yet been posted.

See the tab “Marine” at the top of the Home page for a brief introduction to marine ecoregions. The system we follow here divides the oceans of the world into realms, provinces, and ecoregions. The full global map is in the Marine page; the map below shows a close-up of the marine ecoregions in the vicinity of the southern tip of South America and in nearby Antarctica.

The ecoregions 185-187 are in the Temperate South America Realm and in the Magellanic Province. They are the Patagonian Shelf (No. 185), Malvinas/Falklands (No. 186) and Channels and Fjords of southern Chile (No. 187).

The ecoregions to the south near Antarctica fall in the Southern Ocean Realm and in the Scotia Sea Province. Some of them are South Georgia (No. 220), South Orkney (No. 221), South Shetland Islands (No. 222), and Antarctic Peninsula (No. 223).
